For alpine athletes from Carrabassett Valley Academy (CVA), the journey to Olympic aspirations begins on the challenging terrain of Sugarloaf, specifically on the renowned Narrow Gauge trail. This steep and demanding course has been pivotal in shaping the skills and determination of athletes like Sam Morse, who is set to represent the U.S. in the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic Games.
Morse’s journey started at the tender age of 23 months, when he first clicked into a pair of skis at Sugarloaf, quickly developing a passion for the sport that would carry him forward. Joining CVA’s Weekend Program gave him the foundation to hone his racing skills under the guidance of dedicated coaches. Known for his exceptional work ethic and focus, Morse was admitted to CVA a year early, reflecting his commitment to alpine racing.
Inspired by his family and local community, his Olympic dream was ignited in 2002 when his father and brother attended the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, where they witnessed Bode Miller, a CVA alum, winning two silver medals. Symbolically, a medal was even placed around his brother’s neck for a photo, reinforcing Sam’s belief that the Olympics were within reach.
Throughout his time at CVA, Morse thrived in an environment that encouraged independence and responsibility, eventually graduating as valedictorian in 2013. He later pursued alpine racing at Dartmouth College, where he continued to excel, becoming the Junior World Downhill Champion in 2017. His impressive career with the U.S. Ski Team saw him achieving multiple top finishes on the FIS World Cup circuit, establishing himself as a formidable competitor.
