Indiana University football coach Curt Cignetti is known for his composed demeanor on the field, but off it, he is a devoted family man. His deep-seated passion for football, which has driven his successful coaching career, can be traced back to his father, Frank Cignetti Sr., who was a significant influence in his life.
In a candid interview with the Indy Star in November 2024, Curt reflected on the expectations he faced when he took on the role of head coach. “First of all, my dad would be really mad at some of the things I said when I got hired,” he shared. “I thought this situation was a clash of two worlds. One used to winning, and winning championships, and another where people thought it was impossible. I wasn’t going to lower my expectations and standards.” His strong resolve seems to have paid off, with Curt leading the IU Hoosiers to a stellar 14-0 record in 2025.
Curt’s confidence was notably expressed during a 2023 interview, where he declared, “I win — Google me,” emphasizing his winning track record. This bold statement reflects not just his self-assurance but the legacy of success he is committed to continuing.
The Cignetti family is steeped in football tradition. Frank Cignetti Sr., who passed away in September 2022 at the age of 84, was a renowned coach known for his tenure at West Virginia University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he served until 2005. His contributions to the sport earned him induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013. Curt honored his father’s memory, stating on social media, “I was blessed to have a great Dad! He inspired me and so many others. Love you Dad! Rest in peace.”
Curt’s brother, Frank Cignetti Jr., has also made his mark in the football world, beginning his coaching career under their father at IUP. Frank Jr. has held various coaching positions in the NFL and college football, including roles with the Kansas City Chiefs and the New Orleans Saints, and currently serves as the offensive coordinator for IUP.
Curt’s personal life is just as fulfilling, as he has been married to Manette Cignetti since May 1989. Their relationship began in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and flourished through long-distance communication. In an October 2024 interview, Manette praised her husband, noting his organizational skills, integrity, and leadership qualities, which serve as a model for his players.
Together, Curt and Manette are raising three children—Natalie, Carly, and Curtis—fostering a family atmosphere that underpins both their personal and professional lives.
