On August 4, 2025, the San José de Cúcuta municipality announced immediate actions taken in response to disturbances that occurred in the city the previous Saturday. Local authorities are collaborating with the Metropolitan Police and other security agencies to restore order and ensure the safety of all citizens.
Following the incidents, the Municipal Administration convened the Local Commission for Safety, Comfort, and Coexistence in Football to enhance preventive measures and implement specific strategies aimed at preventing further incidents. In particular, they have decided to close borders, which includes restricting the arrival of fans from Atlético Nacional, as well as prohibiting flags and musical ensembles from entering sporting venues.
Additionally, a meeting was held with leaders of the football fan groups, involving representatives from the Mayor’s Office, Police, Public Prosecutor’s Office, Ombudsman’s Office, and other institutions. The goal was to engage in dialogue, listen to their concerns, and establish commitments that foster a football culture rooted in integration and respect.
Miguel Castellanos, the Secretary of Government, emphasized that Cúcuta cannot continue to be characterized by violence, particularly related to football, urging citizens to contribute to peaceful coexistence and the enjoyment of the game. Edwin Cardona, the Secretary of Citizen Security, reiterated the commitment to ensuring public safety alongside the Metropolitan Police, aiming for the fan base to set an example of good behavior and pride for Cúcuta.
The city’s administration calls upon fans, team supporters, and the community as a whole to reject all forms of violence, promote mutual respect, and embrace sport as an opportunity for unity, healthy competition, and local pride. They remain dedicated to working closely with authorities and social actors to ensure that both sports and civic coexistence flourish in a safe and respectful environment for all residents of Cúcuta.
This effort reflects a hopeful approach towards transforming local football culture into a positive force for community bonding, emphasizing the importance of harmonious sporting events.
