Cucumbers distributed across several provinces have been recalled due to concerns about potential salmonella contamination. SunFed Produce announced that its whole fresh American cucumbers, sold between October 12 and November 26, are involved in this recall after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) linked the product to reported salmonella cases.
The recalled cucumbers were packaged in bulk, identifiable by the “SunFed” label, or placed in unmarked white boxes or black plastic crates with a sticker noting the implicated grower, “Agrotato, S.A. de C.V.” These cucumbers were shipped to regions including Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, as well as to various states in the U.S. The company noted that consumers may have accessed the cucumbers through foodservice and retail outlets that may not have been specifically listed.
Immediately upon receiving notification of the issue, SunFed acted swiftly to protect consumers, according to its president, Craig Slate. The company is collaborating closely with authorities and the implicated grower to investigate the potential source of contamination.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the cucumber outbreak has resulted in 68 illnesses across 19 states, with 18 individuals requiring hospitalization, though fortunately, there have been no fatalities.
Additionally, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is carrying out its own investigation into food safety, which could lead to further recall warnings in Canada. Currently, they advise Canadians to refrain from using, selling, serving, or distributing the affected products. SunFed is also reaching out to its direct buyers to inform them about the recall, clarifying that no other products from SunFed or its suppliers are implicated in this situation.
Health Canada has noted that symptoms of salmonellosis typically manifest between six and 72 hours post-consumption, with symptoms ranging from mild fever and chills to more severe conditions, particularly in young children and the elderly.
Although recalls can be concerning, the prompt response by SunFed and health authorities demonstrates a commitment to public safety and thorough investigation, helping ensure that such incidents can be managed effectively in the future.
