As winter progresses, the Chicago Cubs are concentrating on solidifying their bench and depth ahead of spring training. While free agency still holds some significant players, much of the primary roster building appears to be complete.

On Thursday, news emerged that the Cubs have signed veteran outfielder Chas McCormick to a minor-league deal, which includes an invitation to major-league spring camp. McCormick’s addition adds another layer of competition as the Cubs finalize their roster.

Previously a standout with the Houston Astros, McCormick enjoyed a breakout year just a few seasons ago, posting a 3.4 bWAR with a notable .273/.353/.489 slash line, hitting 22 home runs and driving in 70 runs – a peak performance in his career. However, his performance has waned over the past two years, as he struggled with a disappointing .211/.273/.301 stat line in 2025. Further complicating matters, advanced metrics reflected a downturn in his contributions, although his defensive skills were recognized with a positive valuation in 2024.

As the Cubs evaluate their bench, McCormick’s performance this spring could dictate whether he secures a spot on the Opening Day roster at the expense of outfield prospect Kevin Alcantara, who currently has uncertain prospects for playing time. The organization’s outfield dynamics could shift, especially with Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki poised for free agency this fall, leading to potential openings on the roster.

Optimistically, a successful spring could set the stage for McCormick to regain his form and contribute significantly to the Cubs. Moreover, a reunion with former teammate Alex Bregman adds a layer of familiarity that could help him navigate this pivotal phase in his career. The Cubs aim to leverage their offseason acquisitions effectively, hoping that minor-league signings like McCormick can rise to the occasion and bolster their game plan for the 2026 season.
