Cubs Shake Up Bullpen: Merryweather Out, Kriske In!

The Chicago Cubs made a significant roster change ahead of their game against the Cincinnati Reds, designating right-handed reliever Julian Merryweather for assignment. This move comes as the Cubs aim to refine their bullpen, especially after Merryweather’s subpar performance this season.

Merryweather, who is in his third season with the Cubs, had been a reliable option for the team in 2023, showcasing a 3.38 ERA over 69 appearances. However, injuries sidelined him for a significant portion of the 2024 season. His struggles have continued into 2025, where he has recorded a 5.79 ERA across 21 games, marked by a concerning increase in his walk rate and a decrease in strikeouts.

In a corresponding move, the Cubs have called up right-handed pitcher Brooks Kriske from Triple-A Iowa. At 31, Kriske brings MLB experience from previous stints with the Kansas City Royals, New York Yankees, and Baltimore Orioles, appearing in a total of 20 big league games. During his time in Triple-A this season, Kriske has been impressive, posting a 2-0 record and a 3.38 ERA over 13 relief appearances, striking out 28 batters in 18.2 innings.

The Cubs are also looking to bolster their pitching staff further, as right-hander Ryan Brasier had just been activated from the injured list prior to Friday’s game. With Kriske stepping in, Chicago is hopeful for improvements in their bullpen as they pursue a series victory in Cincinnati. The game is set to commence at 3:10 p.m. local time, available for fans to watch on the Marquee Sports Network.

This roster adjustment reflects the Cubs’ commitment to enhance their team’s performance as they navigate the competitive landscape of the MLB season.
