“I wanted to share an update regarding my health,” Sandberg wrote. “It’s been a challenging few months as I have been going through treatment on a regular basis. While I am continuing to fight, I’m looking forward to making the most of every day with my loving family and friends.”
Despite the ongoing health challenges, Sandberg remains passionate about baseball, stating he has been keeping up with the games, though he hasn’t been able to frequent Wrigley Field as much as he hoped since the season began. Sandberg’s fight against cancer began with a diagnosis of prostate cancer in January 2024. After announcing he was cancer-free in August, he faced the difficult news of a recurrence and spread of the disease in December. Throughout his illustrious 16-season career, predominantly with the Cubs, Sandberg became a celebrated figure in baseball history. He was the 1984 National League MVP, earned nine Gold Glove awards, and was recognized as a ten-time All-Star. His lifetime statistics include a batting average of .285, 282 home runs, and over 1,000 RBIs, leading to his election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.
