Cubs Adjust Lineup as Rising Star Crow-Armstrong Faces Injury Setback

CHICAGO — In a notable shift for the Chicago Cubs, Pete Crow-Armstrong was absent from the starting lineup during their series opener against the Kansas City Royals at Wrigley Field on Monday. The rising star is sidelined due to a bruised right knee he sustained during a challenging slide in a previous game against the Boston Red Sox, where he performed commendably, achieving a 2-for-4 record with two doubles.

Manager Craig Counsell opted to give Crow-Armstrong a day off following his injury, describing the situation as “just a bit swollen.” He expressed hope that the young player could return by the next game. Seiya Suzuki took over center field duties for the first time in his career, while Ian Happ remained in left field and Kyle Tucker in right, ensuring a solid defensive lineup.

“The slide was clearly altered,” Counsell explained when discussing the circumstances surrounding Crow-Armstrong’s injury. He noted a specific play during the game when Crow-Armstrong was caught in a rundown at third base by Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet. This play led to an awkward slide which likely caused the knee bruising. Both Crow-Armstrong and Counsell believe that the slide was influenced by a blocking-the-bag situation, which the umpiring crew did not acknowledge at the time.

In terms of positioning, Counsell emphasized that while he trusts Suzuki and Happ in center, he would prefer to have Crow-Armstrong back as he has been a key player, starting in 98 of the Cubs’ 99 games this season. Despite this setback, the Cubs have prepared for such scenarios during spring training, allowing Suzuki and Happ to gain experience in the outfield.

While the absence of Crow-Armstrong is a setback for the Cubs, the depth of their roster demonstrates their ability to adapt. The team remains optimistic about Crow-Armstrong’s recovery and looks forward to getting him back in action soon.
