Crystal Palace Boss Hints at Comeback Boost as AZ Alkmaar Test Looms

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner addressed the media ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Conference League clash with AZ Alkmaar at Selhurst Park, scheduled for 20:00 GMT.

During the conference, Glasner confirmed that key players Eddie Nketiah and Rio Cardines will miss the match, although midfielder Adam Wharton will return to the squad despite not being “100% right now” due to recent illness. In a positive development, defender Chadi Riad, who has been sidelined since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January, will also be part of the matchday squad. Glasner expressed his enthusiasm for Riad’s return, stating, “That’s the best news: yesterday he was allowed to train with the team, and he had yesterday’s and today’s session.” While Riad may not see game time yet, Glasner emphasized the importance of having him back and the emotional boost it provides, noting, “It’s just wearing the shirt and seeing the Selhurst atmosphere.”

Discussing fixture scheduling, Glasner mentioned the upcoming Carabao Cup quarter-final against Arsenal, which has been set for 23 December. The manager revealed that the club is attempting to have their Premier League match against Leeds on 21 December moved to an earlier date but noted they have yet to receive a response from the Premier League on this matter. Regarding fixture congestion, he remarked, “I’m always talking about making mistakes as a part of development. The EFL and Premier League didn’t solve this problem before the start of the season. They will learn from it, and I think next year they will have a solution before the season starts.”

As for the upcoming encounter with AZ Alkmaar, Glasner underscored that, while no match is deemed a “must win,” the team is fully committed to securing a victory. He acknowledged the challenge posed by the experienced European side, noting their competitive performances against clubs like West Ham and Aston Villa in recent seasons.

This blend of cautious optimism and strategic planning from Glasner highlights his commitment to the team’s growth as they prepare for an important fixture that may have implications for their European aspirations.
