OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was recently seen driving a rare Swedish sports car, sparking envy among social media users and irritation from his former friend, Elon Musk.
Altman, 39, has a passion for cars, owning a collection that includes a McLaren and a Koenigsegg Regera. He and his husband, engineer Oliver Mulherin, even drove sports cars on a Dubai race track during a business trip in April, as profiled by the Wall Street Journal.
The Koenigsegg Regera caught social media’s attention over the weekend. Car enthusiast and TikTok user Joseph Velyan first posted a video of the luxury vehicle in April after spotting it in Napa.
“I’ve been into cars almost my whole life, and seeing a Koenigsegg in public was a dream come true,” Velyan told Business Insider. “I attend car events and see rare cars often, but this is the rarest one I’ve seen.”
Velyan originally shared footage of the Koenigsegg on Instagram and TikTok in April but recently reposted the videos upon identifying Altman as the driver. The video was also shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“CEO @OpenAI driving one of the most expensive cars,” the account Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley posted. “How did OpenAI become a for-profit business when it was a nonprofit?”
Shortly after, Musk responded with “great question.” Earlier this year, Musk sued OpenAI, accusing Altman of straying from the company’s original nonprofit mission to advance human life, instead pursuing profits. OpenAI dismissed Musk’s complaints as “frivolous.”
