Crusaders fans are buzzing with excitement over the signing of Maloni Kunawave, who has officially joined the team as part of their 2025 Super Rugby squad. At just 20 years old, Kunawave is one of six promising young talents to secure their first full contracts with the Crusaders, alongside fellow newcomers Toby Bell, Louie Chapman, Liam Jack, Manumaua Letiu, and James White.
Earlier this year, Kunawave had a poignant reunion in Fiji while playing for the New Zealand Development side at the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, where he was able to reconnect with his grandmother after seven years. Since leaving Fiji at the age of 13 to pursue a scholarship in New Zealand, Kunawave has significantly developed his rugby skills, culminating in his representation of New Zealand at the World Rugby Under 20 Championship and a productive season with the Tasman Mako.
The Crusaders’ management is optimistic about Kunawave’s future, underscoring his dynamic play style and Fijian flair, which they believe will bring a new energy to their backline. His inclusion is part of a broader strategy to revamp the squad, which features experienced players like veteran winger Sevu Reece and prop George Bower, all eager to contribute to the team’s objectives for the upcoming season.
The 2025 Crusaders squad consists of 38 players and will be captained once again by David Havili. This season is particularly significant as it marks the last at Apollo Projects Stadium before the team transitions to the new One New Zealand Stadium. Coach Rob Penney expressed optimism about the team’s depth and blend of experience, confident that this mix will foster a competitive and dynamic atmosphere.
As fans eagerly anticipate this new chapter in Crusaders rugby, the 2025 season is shaping up to be a blend of celebration for the franchise’s legacy and a platform for emerging talents to showcase their skills. With tickets for pre-season games rapidly selling out, the enthusiasm surrounding the team mirrors their ambition to defend their title and enhance their illustrious history in Super Rugby. The future looks bright for both the Crusaders and their devoted supporters.
