Cuts to a critical service aimed at supporting LGBTQ+ youth have been announced by the Trump administration, specifically impacting the “Press 3 Option” of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which will be discontinued on July 17. This decision has raised alarms among advocacy groups and local officials in Northeast Wisconsin, as the risk of suicide is significantly higher among LGBTQ+ individuals.
Dana Johnson, a member of the Outagamie County Board of Supervisors and an advocate with Fox Valley Pride, expressed concern that the cuts signal a lack of acceptance and support for the LGBTQ+ community. He emphasized the already insufficient mental health resources available and warned that eliminating this specific service will exacerbate the ongoing mental health crisis facing LGBTQ+ youth.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which announced the cuts, claims that the elimination of the “Press Option 3” will enable a more comprehensive focus on all individuals, including those in the LGBTQ+ community. However, advocates argue that without this specialized option, LGBTQ+ youth may not receive the affirming care they need during crises.
Mel Davis, Executive Director of the Rainbow Alliance Advocacy, highlighted the unique language and cultural understanding required to effectively connect with LGBTQ+ youth. She fears that removing this dedicated option will hinder youth from seeking the help they need, emphasizing the importance of accessible emotional support.
Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin, though unable to comment on the cuts, reiterated their commitment to the LGBTQ+ community, stating, “You are loved, you are seen, you matter—and you are never alone.” They assure that support and compassion are available every day.
In light of these changes, it is crucial for the LGBTQ+ community to know that help is still accessible through the 988 Lifeline, and those in crisis should not hesitate to reach out for support. The ongoing advocacy and community solidarity highlight a hopeful commitment to ensuring that LGBTQ+ youth feel valued and supported during their times of need.
