Crimson Tide Quarterback Battle Heats Up Ahead of 2025 Season!

As Alabama prepares for its 2025 football season, anticipation is building for their first nonconference matchup against Florida State on August 30. Head coach Kalen DeBoer recently shared insights on the team’s quarterback situation during an appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show. He indicated that veteran quarterback Ty Simpson would likely take the lead if a game were held this Saturday.

DeBoer noted Simpson’s steady performance during spring practice, emphasizing the importance of competition among the quarterbacks. He highlighted the need for continuous improvement among the other candidates, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell. Fortunately for Mack and Russell, there is still time before the season begins, with summer workouts and fall camp approaching, offering them the opportunity to prove themselves.

Ty Simpson served as the primary backup to Jalen Milroe last season but did not see substantial playing time, recording six appearances mostly during game blowouts. Despite the limited experience, DeBoer values Simpson’s four years in the program, viewing him as the most seasoned option among the quarterbacks. In contrast, Mack is entering his first year of meaningful practice after a rocky start to his career, while Russell is a true freshman who has just joined the team.

With Alabama facing ten power conference opponents this season, including a rigorous eight-game SEC schedule alongside matchups against Florida State and Wisconsin, DeBoer recognizes the urgency in solidifying the starting quarterback role. As kickoff approaches in just over three months, he is inclined to rely on the experience that Simpson provides, setting the stage for a competitive preseason leading into a pivotal season.

This reality presents an exciting opportunity for the players to rise to the occasion, showcasing their abilities under pressure. The upcoming summer and fall sessions are crucial for Mack and Russell, who have the chance to challenge for the starting position and impact Alabama’s season significantly. With a blend of experience and emerging talent, the Crimson Tide are gearing up for a promising campaign ahead.
