Maria A. Bucci, 51, was apprehended by East Greenwich police shortly after midnight on December 18, facing charges of driving under the influence (DUI) for the first time, along with multiple traffic violations. The incident unfolded during a traffic stop when Bucci, who has previously run for mayor of Cranston and currently chairs the city’s Democratic Committee, allegedly invoked her political status.
Bucci, a former city councilwoman and the Democratic nominee for the Cranston mayoral position in the 2020 election, lost a close race for the House District 15 seat in 2024. As chair of the local Democratic Committee, she holds a significant political role.
According to police reports, an officer observed Bucci’s white Lincoln Aviator swerving down Division Street. Upon stopping her, the officer detected a strong smell of alcohol and noted her bloodshot, glassy eyes. During the encounter, Bucci claimed to be dropping off her cousin and admitted to drinking a glass of wine at a Christmas party.
Body camera footage revealed Bucci repeatedly asking the officer if he recognized her, expressing frustration during the stop. When the officer, Anthony St. Laurent, stated he did not know her, Bucci reacted defensively and made several confrontational comments, questioning the officer’s age and expressing disdain for law enforcement. The exchange included her asserting that she would be treated differently if she were of a different racial background.
The situation escalated as Bucci continued to shout at the officer and displayed aggressive behavior, even during her time at the police station, where she reportedly made several hostile remarks aimed at St. Laurent and criticized the police profession in general.
After being processed, Bucci was released on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond and is expected to appear in Kent County District Court on January 5. As of now, no attorney has been publicly associated with her case.
This incident highlights the challenges individuals in public service face when their actions come under scrutiny, and it serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that accompany leadership roles.
