After nearly two months since Hoda Kotb announced her departure from the TODAY show, NBC has revealed that Craig Melvin will step into the role of co-anchor alongside Savannah Guthrie. Starting on January 13, he will take Hoda’s place during the 7 and 8 a.m. hours following her farewell on January 10.
Expressing his excitement, Craig stated, “I am beyond excited and grateful,” and referred to this opportunity as one of many blessings in his career. The announcement was met with enthusiasm from the staff at NBC; Savannah noted that it was one of the most popular decisions by NBC News, leading to applause among the team.
Craig has been with NBC News for nearly 14 years, serving in various roles including weekend co-anchor and news anchor. Besides his professional achievements, he is family-oriented as the husband of sports broadcaster Lindsay Czarniak and a father to two children, Delano and Sybil.
Continuing his current position, Craig will also co-host the 3rd hour of TODAY with Al Roker, Dylan Dreyer, and Sheinelle Jones. Libby Leist, the senior vice president of TODAY, praised Craig’s contributions, saying he brings a mix of talent, warmth, and Southern charm to the show.
Throughout the announcement, the TODAY team showered Craig with well-wishes, and Hoda commended him, recognizing him as perfect for the new role. Al Roker, who joined via video chat, expressed his pride for Craig, affirming his deserving nature for the co-anchor position.
Additionally, in the wake of Hoda’s departure, the fourth hour of TODAY, previously co-hosted by Hoda and Jenna Bush Hager, will relaunch as TODAY with Jenna & Friends, featuring a rotating cast of co-hosts until a permanent replacement is designated. The team plans to celebrate Hoda during her final shows.
Reflecting on her decision to leave, Hoda shared that reaching her 60th birthday prompted her to embrace change and seek new opportunities. She expressed gratitude for her time on the show and the connection she felt with the viewers.
This transition marks not only a new chapter for Craig but also an exciting evolution for the TODAY show. It reflects the show’s commitment to adapting and growing while honoring the contributions of its beloved hosts.
Overall, this shift indicates a positive continuation of the TODAY legacy, with Craig stepping into the spotlight ready to engage viewers with his signature style and heartfelt personality.
