The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is enhancing its efforts to combat traffic violations, particularly speeding, with the recent deployment of portable speed cameras across Fiji. In just two months, these cameras have recorded over 15,000 speeding violations, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa stated that speeding continues to be a leading cause of road fatalities, with 37 out of 62 deaths in 2025 linked to excessive speed. The introduction of 12 portable cameras since their deployment in September has resulted in significant violations, with the Western Division reporting 8,624 infringements, followed by Central-Eastern at 5,314, and Northern at 1,651.
Rokosawa underscored that speed limits are enforceable laws and warned that repeat offenders could face serious consequences, including potential license suspension or cancellation. From January to October of the previous year, the LTA had already canceled 19 licenses and suspended 48, alongside issuing thousands of warnings.
The strategically placed cameras, designed to operate in high-risk zones and near schools, utilize advanced technology for precise evidence collection and fair enforcement. This initiative aligns with the LTA’s commitment to fostering responsible driving behaviors, aiming to significantly decrease the number of traffic-related fatalities.
The combination of stringent enforcement through portable cameras and ongoing educational campaigns indicates a multifaceted approach to improving road safety in Fiji. Authorities remain hopeful that these efforts will lead to a notable change in driving behavior and safer roads for all users. The proactive steps taken signify a dedication to reducing accidents and saving lives, building a safer future for Fiji’s roads.
