The Dallas Cowboys made a strategic move in April when they traded a 2025 fifth-round pick to the New England Patriots for quarterback Joe Milton, along with a seventh-rounder in the same year. Milton, who has been the backup to Dak Prescott throughout the season, has shown glimpses of potential; however, his playing time has been limited.

K.D. Drummond from Cowboys Wire believes it’s time for the Cowboys to give Milton some game action as the season winds down. Notably, Milton’s stock has risen following a mixed preseason. In a December 17 commentary, Drummond argues that, given the state of the team’s playoff chances, it would be beneficial for the Cowboys to evaluate Milton sooner rather than later. Over the course of two games this season, Milton has completed 6 of 9 passes for 99 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, albeit in losing efforts to the Chicago Bears and the Denver Broncos.

Milton represents a low-risk investment for the Cowboys, being under contract through 2027 with a rookie deal totaling just $4.2 million. As Prescott approaches age 33 and has a history of injuries, having a dependable backup could be critical for the team. Drummond advocates for giving Milton extended playing time in the final three games, especially with the Cowboys holding only a 1% chance of making the playoffs.

Milton’s collegiate performance further adds to his appeal. He became a full-time starter in 2023 with the Tennessee Volunteers, completing nearly 65% of his passes for 2,813 yards, 20 touchdowns, and just five interceptions. His growth as a player and his last start for New England, where he completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, showcased his potential.

As the Cowboys face a challenging road ahead, including a significant deficit in the NFC East standings, the opportunity to allow Milton to take the field could prove valuable. If he excels, Dallas will gain insight into a possible future starter; if he struggles, it could prompt the team to seek a more experienced backup in the offseason. Allowing Milton to demonstrate his capabilities can only benefit the team moving forward.
