The Dallas Cowboys have seen their relationship with linebacker Micah Parsons deteriorate in the wake of his failure to secure a long-term contract, leading to his absence from much of the offseason activities and all of training camp. Just before the start of the current season, the Cowboys made the decision to trade Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Looking ahead, it appears that the Cowboys may face a similar situation with wide receiver George Pickens. Expectations are that the team will use the franchise tag on Pickens, though his long-term contract status remains uncertain. Until an agreement is reached and Pickens signs the franchise tag, he will refrain from participating in any offseason workouts or training camp activities.

Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer addressed concerns regarding Pickens, downplaying the situation by referencing his previous experiences with players who have had contract discussions. “This is going to play out the way it’s supposed to play out,” he stated at the Scouting Combine. Schottenheimer emphasized that his relationship with Pickens remains unaffected, similar to his rapport with players like CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott, who also navigated contract negotiations in the past.

In 2025, Pickens had a standout season, leading the Cowboys in several categories with 137 targets, 93 receptions, 1,429 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns. This impressive performance may lead Pickens to seek a contract comparable to, if not greater than, the four-year, $136 million extension CeeDee Lamb received, which includes $100 million guaranteed.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding Pickens’ future, Schottenheimer expressed a desire to retain the talented receiver beyond the 2026 season. Reflecting on Pickens’ competitive nature and passion for football, he expressed optimism for the player’s future with the franchise, stating, “I hope… I know this guy is a competitor and loves football, so I hope so.”

The situations surrounding both Parsons and Pickens highlight the complexities of player contracts in the NFL, showcasing how negotiations can impact team dynamics and player relationships. The Cowboys remain hopeful for a resolution that fosters a positive environment for Pickens as they navigate the approaching offseason.
