The Dallas Cowboys’ secondary has faced significant challenges during the 2025 NFL season, particularly as they head into Week 15. Currently, they hold the unfortunate distinction of being last in the league for yardage allowed through the air, having given up 3,317 yards. This issue has sparked considerable criticism, especially directed toward cornerback DaRon Bland, who signed a substantial four-year, $92 million contract extension earlier this year.

While expectations for Bland have been high, his performance has shown a mix of potential and struggles. Notably, in man coverage, he has been effective, yielding only 5.3 yards per attempt, placing him 11th in the league for this metric. In contrast, he has struggled in zone coverage, allowing 9.6 yards per attempt—ranking him as one of the worst in the NFL—along with a concerning completion rate of 70.6%, compared to a mere 50% in man coverage.

Critics have pointed to defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus’s strategic choices as a root of the problem. Despite Bland’s proficiency in man coverage, Eberflus has opted for a predominantly zone-heavy scheme, which does not align well with the strengths of the Cowboys’ secondary, including Trevon Diggs, currently on injured reserve, and rookie Shavon Revel Jr., who was drafted for his man coverage abilities.

When Eberflus was first named as Dallas’s defensive coordinator, many viewed it as an exceptional choice given his previous successes, albeit a mixed tenure as head coach of the Chicago Bears. However, it has become increasingly clear that the Cowboys have assembled a roster better suited for man coverage, creating a mismatch between personnel and scheme.

As the Cowboys look ahead, the possibility of a coaching change might be on the table if Eberflus continues to resist adapting his approach. It’s a perplexing situation, considering it would be a third consecutive year with a new defensive coordinator, yet persisting with an ineffective scheme would only exacerbate their struggles.

Furthermore, Cowboys fans are gearing up for key matchups ahead, with an injury report detailing six starters and notable players fighting for contract extensions in the final weeks of the season. The upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings presents a crucial opportunity for Dallas to turn around their fortunes and showcase their talent in a more effective system.
