As Oklahoma State University prepares for the 2025 season, the football program is reflecting on a challenging 2024 campaign. The Cowboys finished with a disappointing record of 3-9, marking their worst season in nearly 30 years, after suffering nine consecutive losses, all against Big 12 opponents.
The team had high expectations following their recent success, having contended for Big 12 championships in two of the previous three years. With the return of 20 starters, hopes were high for a rebound season. However, injuries plagued the defense, and the offense struggled to regain its previous effectiveness despite retaining many key players.
Head coach Mike Gundy attributed some of the offensive woes to inconsistent quarterback play, emphasizing the impact that sporadic performances can have on a team’s overall success. He noted that despite a few standout games from quarterback Alan Bowman, there were also several lackluster performances that hindered the team’s ability to secure wins. Furthermore, the inability of the offensive line to create running lanes added extra pressure on the quarterback.
The offensive struggles were compounded by significant issues on defense, particularly against the run. Early-season games against Arkansas and Tulsa indicated weaknesses that were not addressed, leading to opponents consistently racking up rushing yards. Injuries to key players such as Collin Oliver and Nick Martin further exacerbated the situation, resulting in a defense that allowed over 500 yards per game, one of the worst performances in Division I football.
The quarterback position also saw a revolving door of players as Bowman was benched mid-season, which resulted in Garret Rangel taking over before suffering an injury. This created more uncertainty for the Cowboys, who now face a quarterback competition heading into the offseason.
The path forward for Oklahoma State seems steep, but there are promising signs. With a focus on addressing the offensive line problems and defensive consistency, as well as establishing stability at quarterback, the Cowboys can build toward a more successful 2025 season.
