John David “JD” Souther, a renowned songwriter and musician instrumental in defining the country-rock genre in Southern California during the 1970s, has passed away at the age of 78. Souther, who collaborated on many of the Eagles’ iconic songs, including “Best of My Love” and “Heartache Tonight,” died on Tuesday at his home in New Mexico, as announced on his official website.
In addition to his work with the Eagles, he collaborated with numerous artists such as James Taylor, Bob Seger, and Bonnie Raitt, achieving success as a solo artist as well. He was preparing for a tour with Karla Bonoff scheduled to start on September 24 in Phoenix, which has now been canceled.
Souther was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013, where he was recognized as a “principal architect of the Southern California sound” and a significant influence on many songwriters. He was also well-known in the social scene, having relationships with prominent figures like Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, and Stevie Nicks, who remembered him in a 1982 interview for his charm as well as his “male chauvinistic” traits.
Born in Detroit and raised in Amarillo, Texas, Souther moved to Los Angeles in the late 1960s, where he met Glenn Frey, a founding member of the Eagles. Their musical journey began with the band Longbranch Pennywhistle, and Frey credited Souther with introducing him to country music.
After Frey’s passing in 2016, Souther reflected on their bond, saying, “The music and the love are indestructible.” Souther’s connection to the Eagles was deep, evident when he appeared on the back cover of their 1973 album, “Desperado,” in a reenactment of the Dalton Gang’s capture. He described his experiences at The Troubadour music club as invaluable for his development as a songwriter.
Souther’s solo career kicked off with his self-titled debut album in 1972, followed by the formation of The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band. His notable solo hit, “You’re Only Lonely,” was released in 1979. He is also recognized for writing tracks for other artists, including “Run Like a Thief” for Bonnie Raitt and “Faithless Love” for Ronstadt.
He appeared in various television shows, such as “thirtysomething” and “Nashville,” and acted in films including “Postcards from the Edge” and “My Girl 2.”
