The country music community is mourning the tragic loss of Brett James, the esteemed singer/songwriter, who died in a plane crash in North Carolina last month. The accident also claimed the lives of James’ wife, Melody Carole, 59, and her daughter, Meryl Wilson, 28.

Recent updates from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have shed light on the unfortunate incident, detailing James’ final radio transmission. At approximately 2:48 p.m., as he approached the Macon County Airport at an altitude of 6,800 feet, James communicated his intention to perform a 360-degree turn for landing. This marked his last communication before the plane began its descent.

According to the NTSB report, the aircraft descended to 6,300 feet and began a turn to approach the runway. Surveillance footage captured the airplane flying over the runway before initiating a descending left turn. Tragically, the plane entered a tightening spiral before crashing near an elementary school, with no signs of engine failure observed.

Brett James was not just a notable artist; he was a Grammy-winning songwriter and a key figure in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. His passing has prompted an outpouring of grief on social media. Music journalist Alison Bonaguro reflected the sentiment of many, expressing shock at the loss of one of Nashville’s finest songwriters. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) praised James for being a trusted collaborator with many leading artists in country music, emphasizing his advocacy for songwriters.

James, 57, began his career as a solo artist in 1995, releasing three singles that year. However, he gained fame primarily as a songwriter, penning 494 songs that were recorded by others. He is particularly renowned for writing Carrie Underwood’s iconic 2006 hit, “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” among many other popular tracks for artists including Martina McBride, Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, and Rodney Atkins.

The profound impact of Brett James on the country music landscape will be remembered as his legacy continues to resonate through the songs he created. As tributes and memories flow in from fans and industry peers, it is clear that James’ contributions to music will not be forgotten.
