A proposal for a feasibility study has been put forward regarding the Fiji Meats Industry Board Abattoir, focusing on potential upgrades, expansions, or even the relocation of the current facilities. This initiative was discussed during a meeting between Dr. Andrew Tukana, the Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, and officials from the Fiji Meat Industry Board.

The proposed improvements for the abattoir encompass the creation of an Integrated Training Facility aimed at enhancing the skillsets of meat workers, thereby equipping them for employment opportunities both locally and internationally. This crucial training component was highlighted by Scott Robinson from Response Group International, an Australian consultancy, who presented the feasibility study’s objectives.

Robinson detailed that the study aims to identify the most commercially viable options for the abattoir that comply with Australian standards while simultaneously boosting profitability, improving market supply, and enhancing product quality. He emphasized the importance of addressing the skilled labor shortage within Fiji and other Pacific Island nations, a challenge that the modern training facility intends to tackle effectively.
