In a chilling exploration of the tragic death of Ellen Greenberg, a new true crime docuseries delves into the controversial and unresolved details surrounding her case. The series titled “Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg?” is set to premiere on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers, starting Monday, September 29. This gripping three-part series is brought by ABC News Studios and produced in collaboration with Lewellen Pictures, owned by Dakota and Elle Fanning.
Ellen Greenberg, a 27-year-old first-grade teacher, was found dead in her Philadelphia apartment with 20 stab wounds on January 26, 2011, during a severe snowstorm. Her fiancé, Sam Goldberg, discovered her remains after allegedly being unable to re-enter their apartment due to a locked door following his workout in the building’s gym. Initially ruled a homicide by Assistant Medical Examiner Dr. Marlon Osbourne, the cause of death was later controversially changed to suicide after a meeting with the Philadelphia Police Department.
Ellen’s parents, Sandee and Josh Greenberg, have been tirelessly fighting for justice and clarity in their daughter’s mysterious death for over a decade. The docuseries chronicles their relentless efforts to have Ellen’s death reclassified as either a homicide or undetermined, a campaign that has now spanned 14 years.
The decision to change the manner of her death from homicide to suicide effectively halted any potential criminal investigation and left many unanswered questions. Despite the peculiar circumstances, Sam Goldberg has never been considered a suspect, and there have been no charges filed in connection with Ellen’s death.
Earlier this year, the Greenbergs reached a settlement with the City of Philadelphia and others involved. As part of the agreement, city officials consented to revisit the classification of Ellen’s death. Moreover, Dr. Osbourne has since stated he no longer believes Ellen died by suicide.
The docuseries offers unprecedented access to Ellen’s case files and includes never-before-seen interviews with her friends, relatives, former students, and colleagues. The series aims to shed light on Ellen’s life and the surrounding circumstances with an intimate portrayal of her character and the system’s apparent inconsistencies in handling her case.
Executive produced by Nancy Schwartzman, the docuseries aspires to not only honor Ellen’s memory but also highlight potential flaws within the investigative process. By painting a vivid picture of Ellen as a cherished and vibrant young woman, the series seeks to reignite public interest and uncover the truth behind her death.
“Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg?” promises a riveting narrative of mystery and perseverance, urging viewers to question the original investigation and consider what may have gone wrong.
