In an interview with MassLive’s Christopher Smith, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora elaborated on the advantages of having Trevor Story bat second in the team’s lineup. Cora remarked on Story’s impressive performance in the last three months of the previous season, stating, “What he did last year, the last three months, he was one of the best hitters in the big leagues.”
Cora emphasized Story’s impressive stats, including 30 stolen bases and nearly 90 runs batted in, underscoring the veteran’s ability to hit effectively to the opposite field. He highlighted the strategic element of having Story positioned behind leadoff hitter Roman Anthony, suggesting that Story could capitalize on matchups with left-handed pitchers. However, Cora stopped short of confirming that Story would definitively occupy the No. 2 spot in the batting order.
In the 2025 season, Story had a standout year, playing a career-high 157 games and starting 156 at shortstop. He posted a .263 batting average with 25 home runs, 96 RBIs, 91 runs scored, and a personal-best 31 stolen bases in 32 attempts across 612 at-bats, concluding with a .741 OPS. After facing early struggles, with an OPS below .600 through late May, he rebounded strongly to become a consistent offensive contributor in the latter part of the season.
This marked Story’s first full season since 2021, a significant achievement considering his past injury challenges. His performance helped propel the Red Sox into the postseason, though they eventually faced a wild-card defeat against the New York Yankees. Following the season, Story opted into the final two years of his contract, which will see him remain with the Red Sox through 2027 at $25 million per year.
Throughout his 10-year major league career, the 33-year-old infielder has accrued a .265 batting average, 1,070 hits, 204 home runs, and 636 RBIs, along with 160 stolen bases. He has been recognized with two Silver Slugger Awards and two All-Star selections during his tenure with the Colorado Rockies.
As the Red Sox approach the upcoming season, Story has arrived at spring training in good health and with the motivation to build upon his successful 2025 campaign, aiming to provide stability and leadership to the team’s infield.
