Eight individuals, including an alleged illegal immigrant, faced a Suva court following a series of recent police raids that uncovered methamphetamine in various locations. The operations, which took place in Flagstaff and along Rewa St, resulted in the arrest of both Chinese nationals and local residents, all of whom are currently remanded in custody.
During the Flagstaff raid, Josua Ravula and Yin Qing Qing were apprehended with 42.95 grams of methamphetamine and now face charges for unlawful possession of illicit drugs and possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime. Because Qing does not speak English, arrangements have been made for a Mandarin interpreter to assist her when the case continues on October 9.
Simultaneously, the first raid on Rewa St led to the arrest of Yu Yang Fang, Minghui Dai, and Zhou Lan, who are facing similar charges to those arrested in Flagstaff. Their court appearance is set for October 3.
A subsequent raid on Rewa St led to the arrest of three more individuals, Logamaisino Baules, also known as Lagomarcion Ngirchobekelou, Peniasi Ganilau Delai, and Ginna Mukunghoa Choi. Found with 0.345 grams of methamphetamine, they also face charges of unlawful possession. Baules additionally faces an immigration-related charge for overstaying his visa, while Choi is accused of possession of suspected criminal proceeds after police discovered various currencies in her possession.
Police prosecutor Jone Tupou argued against granting bail due to public interest concerns. However, Magistrate Yogesh Prasad advised both parties to file formal bail applications, and the case has been adjourned to October 27.
