The Garland Company, Inc., based in Cleveland, has launched a new smog-reducing cool roofing granule called StressPly Legacy FR Mineral.
Matt McDermott, president of Garland’s U.S. roofing division, expressed excitement over this innovation, emphasizing the company’s commitment to sustainability and high performance in their product lineup. The new granule features a higher reflectance cool gray surface that activates in sunlight, enabling it to bond with smog particles. This interaction converts smog into water-soluble salt, which is then washed away by rain.
The granules can be rejuvenated for reuse, while the resulting salt returns to the nitrogen cycle, benefiting plant life. Garland reports that a typical 20,000-square-foot commercial roof utilizing the StressPly Legacy FR Mineral will provide smog-reduction benefits equivalent to planting 216 trees or offsetting 14,000 miles of car emissions, roughly the annual driving distance for an average American.
Julie Geyer, director of research and development, noted that StressPly Legacy FR Mineral is an example of Garland’s dedication to enhancing durability and sustainability in their products. The granules are made from six eco-friendly raw materials, including a high-strength reinforcement derived from recycled plastic bottles.
The StressPly Legacy system is designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating repurposed polymers that help divert waste from landfills. It features a smooth membrane with significant pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content. The packaging is also eco-conscious, made entirely from recycled materials.
McDermott added that the StressPly Legacy line not only offers long-lasting waterproof performance but also contributes positively to outdoor air quality, underscoring their motto: “There’s nothing greener than a roof that lasts.”
