As summer approaches, residents in the Philadelphia area are finding relief from the heat thanks to PECO’s annual initiative of distributing free box fans, particularly benefiting those without air conditioning. This year, 600 fans are being provided to senior centers throughout Philadelphia and nearby counties.
Ellen Lucchetti, an 89-year-old resident from Springfield, expressed her gratitude for the initiative, stating, “It’s fantastic… It helps my budget.” Joy Adams, a 77-year-old from Glenolden, echoed similar sentiments, noting how the fans allow her to stay comfortable without getting too cold, as they can easily be moved from room to room.
The fan distribution came alongside Delaware County’s announcement of its 2025 Heat Plan, which aims to alert residents about extreme heat via text messages. To further assist seniors, the Delaware County Health Department has a wellness line that provides tips on staying cool. Seniors are encouraged to call 484-276-2100 for assistance and can also contact the team via email at DelcoWellness@co.delaware.pa.us.
Monica Taylor, Delaware County Council Chair, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating that while many residents can escape the heat, older and vulnerable populations often lack such options. For residents aged 60 and older, free fans can be picked up with identification at the Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging, located in Eddystone, along with several designated senior centers.
This initiative not only demonstrates the community’s commitment to supporting its more vulnerable members during the summer heat but also helps to foster connections among residents by ensuring that no one has to face the sweltering temperatures alone.
