Anita Bryant, the former Miss Oklahoma and singer renowned for her controversial stance against gay rights, has passed away at the age of 84. She died on December 16 at her home in Edmond, Oklahoma, as reported by her family, who did not disclose the cause of death.
Originally hailing from Barnsdall, Oklahoma, Bryant showcased her singing talent from a young age, hosting her own local television show by the age of 12. In 1958, she earned the title of Miss Oklahoma, which propelled her into a successful music career with hit songs such as “Till There Was You,” “Paper Roses,” and “My Little Corner of the World.”
Throughout the late 1960s, she increased her visibility as a performer, participating in USO tours alongside prominent entertainers like Bob Hope, and performing at the White House as well as the national political conventions for both major parties in 1968. She also became a popular spokesperson for several brands, most notably promoting Florida orange juice.
However, her career took a significant turn in the late 1970s when she emerged as a leading voice against gay rights following her successful campaign to repeal a Miami-Dade County ordinance aimed at preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation. Bryant’s actions attracted widespread criticism and backlash, including boycotts of products she advertised, which ultimately led to a decline in her entertainment career and personal challenges, including the dissolution of her first marriage and financial difficulties.
In later years, she founded Anita Bryant Ministries International. Her second husband, Charles Hobson Dry, a NASA test astronaut, passed away the previous year. She is survived by four children, two stepdaughters, and seven grandchildren.
