Jake Paul is facing criticism for his upcoming heavyweight bout against Anthony Joshua, with contender Jermaine Franklin labeling the situation as a “mockery” of boxing. Franklin, who went the distance with Joshua in their 2023 match and has proven himself with victories over notable fighters such as Ivan Dychko and Jerry Forrest, expressed his discontent regarding Paul, a YouTuber turned fighter, stepping into the ring with an established champion like Joshua.
While Franklin acknowledges the financial motivations behind such bouts, he asserts that boxing should not continue to allow Paul to dominate the headlines. “It’s rubbish. I understand it’s for money, so it is what it is. But I don’t think it’s needed,” he stated in an interview with Sky Sports. Paul, who started his professional boxing career at cruiserweight, has earned a mixed reputation through his fights, including a win against former champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and a loss to Tommy Fury.
Joshua, a highly respected figure in the heavyweight division and an Olympic gold medalist, will meet Paul with limits on weight and proper competition gloves in play, allowing him to weigh no more than 245 lbs for the fight. Franklin expressed disbelief over such limitations, saying, “I never heard of a catchweight at heavyweight,” and he cautioned that this match could tarnish Joshua’s reputation. He believes these types of fights are not where Joshua should be focusing his career.
Further discussing Jake Paul, Franklin suggested that true respect as a boxer can only be earned through genuine competition, which he feels Paul is not delivering. “Jake’s coming into the sport and making a mockery of it… now what he does with his other fighters, like [Amanda] Serrano, I appreciate it. She’s a real fighter but you’re not a real fighter,” he said, adding that Paul’s approach does not feel authentic.
In addition to his criticism of Paul, Franklin is preparing for his own match against Moses Itauma, slated for January 24. He believes this fight will be a significant challenge for the rising star, indicating that he will leverage his experience to expose Itauma’s weaknesses. Franklin is eager to make his mark, asserting that he will demonstrate skills that he has not had the chance to showcase in previous matchups.
As the boxing world watches Paul and Joshua’s scheduled encounter on December 19, Franklin’s upcoming fights reflect the enduring spirit and competitiveness present in the heavyweight division. Despite the rising trend of celebrity boxing, Franklin’s perspective serves as a reminder of the sport’s rich traditions and the significance of earning respect in the ring.
