Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj has voiced strong criticism of Minister Filimone Vosarogo’s recent comments regarding parliamentary representation, arguing that his attempts to use “mathematics” to question the legitimacy of the Opposition are not only legally flawed but also threaten constitutional protections. Maharaj underscored that the Constitution and electoral laws clearly outline how Members of Parliament secure their positions.
In his remarks, Maharaj characterized Vosarogo’s stance as both “entertaining” and legally unsound. He referenced the 2013 Constitution and the Electoral Act, asserting that the electorate’s vote is what fundamentally secures an MP’s seat. He firmly rejected claims suggesting that lawmakers could lose their mandate due to their political party being deregistered or due to a split from previous leadership. Maharaj cautioned that such arguments distort the law and set a dangerous precedent.
“The law safeguards parliamentary tenure to prevent political interference,” he stated, reinforcing that MPs derive their authority directly from voter support. Maharaj addressed Vosarogo’s comments on vote counts, emphasizing that popularity does not relieve anyone of legal accountability. While acknowledging the Prime Minister’s impressive total of 77,748 votes, he insisted that such figures do not replace adherence to the principles of law and governance.
Maharaj called for the Prime Minister to reconsider his position amid ongoing legal challenges, highlighting the importance of maintaining the integrity of Parliament over mere popularity. He also criticized the Minister’s understanding of the D’Hondt voting system, clarifying that this method is intended to ensure proportional representation rather than to establish a perceived hierarchy within Parliament.
Furthermore, Maharaj pointed out the unfairness in claims that government-aligned MPs evade scrutiny while Opposition members face enhanced oversight. “The law should not be selectively applied to benefit the Government,” he declared. He assured constituents that the Opposition remains resolute in fulfilling their constitutional duties as elected representatives, a commitment that no Minister can undermine with press statements.
