Icy conditions on Wednesday morning led to numerous accidents across Connecticut’s major highways, significantly affecting the commuter experience. The frigid temperatures caused multiple crashes, prompting closures and delays.

Notably, Connecticut Route 39 remains shut in both directions at Candlewood Knolls Road in New Fairfield after a dump truck collided with a utility pole around 7 a.m. This incident sparked a series of accidents that disrupted traffic throughout the morning.

Earlier in the day, several highways experienced closures due to accidents. The high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane on I-84 West in Manchester, for example, was reopened around midday following hours of closure for emergency road work and bridge maintenance related to a crash involving a tractor-trailer that struck a car and subsequently hit a bridge overpass around 1:30 a.m.

Other incidents included a crash on Route 15 North in Stratford, which resulted in the right lane being closed between Exits 36 and 37, while the Exit 36 off-ramp also faced temporary closure due to an accident reported at approximately 10:45 a.m. Additionally, a tractor-trailer accident on the Exit 30 off-ramp of I-84 East in Southington around 8:30 a.m. led to localized closures.

More disruption occurred on Route 796 North in Milford at around 8 a.m., where two cars were involved in a crash that blocked the left lane near Exit 3A. On I-84 East, a crash at the Exit 52 off-ramp around 6 a.m. also led to a closure.

By 5 a.m., state police found themselves dealing with a cruiser stuck on Route 15 North, prompting further delays along the roadway. Meanwhile, Route 8 North in Bridgeport was affected by a two-car crash around the same time, leading to more disruptions.

As the morning unfolded, I-95 North in New Haven was left with closed lanes due to a multi-vehicle crash, and I-91 South experienced significant delays from a large accident involving eight vehicles and a jackknifed tractor-trailer.

In response to these icy conditions, drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution as roadways may remain hazardous throughout the day. The accidents underscore the importance of adapting driving habits during inclement weather, as ensuring safety on the roads remains a priority for all motorists.
