Belfast’s Michael Conlan has expressed his views on Conor Benn’s unexpected decision to join Zuffa Boxing, criticizing the manner in which Benn approached the change. The announcement last Friday shocked the boxing community when Benn opted for Dana White’s new boxing venture instead of renewing his contract with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, under which he had fought all 25 of his professional bouts, including a notable rematch victory over Chris Eubank Jr. in November.

Benn’s career has been closely associated with Hearn, especially amid the controversies surrounding his 2022 bout with Eubank that was scrapped just days before the fight due to Benn testing positive for the banned substance Clomifene. Hearn had stood by Benn during this challenging time, asserting his innocence and supporting his career, which makes Benn’s departure to a rival promoter even more surprising.

While shifts in management and promotional affiliations are not uncommon in boxing, Conlan admits he was taken aback by Benn’s decision, remarking, “I think he was wrong to do it but then he is getting paid stupid money, so fair play to him.” He acknowledged that Benn’s move may have been financially motivated, as it could benefit him and his family in significant ways, yet he emphasized the importance of handling such transitions more appropriately.

The mixed sentiments surrounding Benn’s decision reflect the complexities of the sport, where loyalty and business interests often collide. Conlan concluded that although the financial incentives might justify Benn’s choice, the lack of communication with Hearn and the way the situation unfolded left much to be desired.
