Congressman Faces Backlash Over Controversial Tweet on Haitians

Louisiana Republican Congressman Clay Higgins has removed a controversial tweet about Haitians after facing strong backlash from House colleagues who accused him of racism.

The tweet, posted on X on Wednesday, included derogatory comments about Haitians, referring to them as “wild,” mentioning eating pets, and making other disparaging remarks. It was a response to a Haitian nonprofit group seeking criminal charges against former President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance over unfounded assertions that migrants in Springfield, Ohio, were consuming pets. These unproven claims have resulted in threats and evacuations in the area.

House Speaker Mike Johnson from Shreveport revealed that Higgins was approached by fellow members on the House floor regarding his tweet, which he later expressed regret for. Johnson mentioned that after reflecting on the matter, Higgins decided to delete the post, indicating a recognition of the offense caused by his words.

Despite removing the tweet, Higgins remarked to CNN that his initial statements were accurate and expressed willingness to share more controversial opinions in the future, emphasizing his right to free speech. He clarified that his comments were aimed at Haitian gangs rather than the broader community.

Democratic Congressman Troy Carter criticized Higgins, calling his remarks “appalling” and highlighting the responsibility elected officials have to treat all racial groups with respect. He stated that such hateful language is harmful and dangerous, contributing to societal division.

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned Higgins’ comments, labeling them as vile and beneath the dignity of Congress. Another colleague, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost, also expressed dismay at the post, calling it one of the most racist comments he has seen from a fellow member in Congress.

The USA Today Network has reached out to Higgins for further comments.
