Community Unites After Infant’s Battle with Rare Powassan Virus

A tragic recent case of Powassan virus has emerged on Martha’s Vineyard involving an infant, Lily Belle Sisco. The rare tick-borne illness has raised alarm in the community, as Lily is reported to be the youngest person ever to contract this virus, according to her family.

Lily was born on June 30, weighing 7 pounds and 1.6 ounces, and was welcomed into the family by her older sister Rose, age 6. Just weeks later, on July 24, Lily was unexpectedly flown to Massachusetts General Hospital with a high fever that was initially a mystery to doctors. As her condition worsened, she suffered seizures, leading to a diagnosis of viral encephalitis.

After further investigation, health professionals from Mass General and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified the cause: a tick bite leading to the Powassan infection. This case marks only the second confirmed instance of Powassan on the Island in 20 years, highlighting its rarity. The family is now sharing their story to ensure that others take preventive measures against such tick bites.

Lily’s mother, Tiffany Sisco, is passionately advocating for awareness, urging residents to check themselves, their children, and pets for ticks regularly. She recounted a brief walk she had taken with her daughters, during which Lily was bitten. Despite showing no initial symptoms, a week later, Lily developed a fever that led to her hospitalization. She has been fighting the infection, which has already caused brain damage and resulted in multiple seizures.

Due to the presence of ticks on Martha’s Vineyard, which has a high rate of Lyme disease, health officials emphasize the critical need for preventive measures. Powassan can be transmitted in as little as 15 minutes, making vigilance crucial.

While there is no known cure or vaccine for the virus, the Sisco family has received an outpouring of community support, with more than $20,000 raised to assist with medical expenses through a GoFundMe campaign initiated by relatives. Ms. Sisco expressed heartfelt gratitude for the community’s compassion and generosity during this challenging time.

Despite the severity of Lily’s condition, her progress in the hospital has left medical staff astounded, with ongoing treatments and assessments scheduled to better understand the extent of her recovery. As the family continues to navigate this tough journey, they remain hopeful and appreciative of the love and support from their community.
