HAZARD, Ky. – “Giving Tuesday,” celebrated on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, was established in 2012 to promote acts of kindness and charitable giving. This global event has a significant impact locally, particularly for organizations working to support communities in need.
Mindy Miller, the Director of Development and Communications for the Housing Development Alliance (HDA), emphasized the importance of this day for funding their initiatives. As a nonprofit, HDA relies primarily on grants and donations to support their mission of rebuilding homes lost to flooding two years ago. To date, they have successfully rebuilt 31 homes, with an estimated 500 still needing reconstruction. Miller highlighted that the funds raised are utilized immediately for essential materials, such as nails, shingles, and flooring, ensuring that contributions make an instant difference in the community.
Carrie McCall, Corps Officer for the Salvation Army in Middlesboro, echoed the sentiment that “Giving Tuesday” serves as a reminder of the true spirit of the holiday season, especially after the hustle of Black Friday shopping. The Salvation Army provides critical services, including meals for the homeless, utility and rent assistance, and daily food pantry support, all funded by individual donations. McCall is aiming to raise $100,000 this season to maintain their vital services throughout the year.
The community response to “Giving Tuesday” has been encouraging. HDA set a goal of raising $1,500 but exceeded it by collecting $1,680 as of the evening of the event. Both organizations stress that every dollar counts and contributes to ongoing community efforts.
Through collective generosity on this day, local nonprofits can enhance their services and assist those in need, fostering a sense of hope and support within the community. The positive impact of such initiatives showcases the strength of community spirit during the holiday season, reminding us all of the importance of giving back.
