Community Responds: Schools Step Up Mental Health Support Amid ICE Fears

Amid rising concerns over ICE sightings in the Central Coast, the Monterey County Health Department and local school districts are mobilizing to provide mental health support for students and families. The anxiety surrounding these sightings, which are frequently shared on social media, has led to increased fears within the community, prompting school officials to take action.

Monica Anizo, deputy superintendent for the Alisal School District, emphasized the importance of collaboration among school counselors, social workers, and community engagement coordinators. “There is a strong collaboration between our student services and our personnel services program, ensuring that we are ready to support any mental health needs,” she stated. The Alisal School District continues to offer counseling services even during the summer break, with community school coordinators available year-round.

The Salinas School District is also actively addressing mental health concerns, particularly those related to anxiety stemming from family fears. Esteban Hernandez of People’s Services mentioned that school counselors are prepared to support students experiencing anxiety issues related to home situations. Additionally, for those who prefer remote assistance, the district has resources that allow families to access therapy services from home, such as individual and family therapy through the Day Break therapy program.

While there has not been a significant surge in demand for these services, county officials want to reassure the community that help is readily available. Melanie Rhodes of Monterey County Behavioral Services highlighted the option for residents to reach out via phone for information about available mental health resources, making it easier for those hesitant to seek in-person support.

The proactive steps taken by local school districts and the Monterey County Health Department demonstrate a commitment to fostering community well-being during a time of uncertainty. These initiatives underline the importance of mental health support as a vital resource for those affected by fear and anxiety, promoting a more resilient community overall.
