Community Mourning: Talented Lacrosse Player Dies After Tragic Injury

Bay Village, Ohio — Tragedy struck the local community as Dylan Veselic, a sophomore and talented player for the Bay High School boys lacrosse team, passed away following a severe head injury sustained during a game against Olmsted Falls on Tuesday night. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by the school on Thursday morning.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the Bay Village Boys Lacrosse organization conveyed the family’s sorrow and expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from the community. “With heavy hearts, the Veselic family shares the news that Dylan has passed away from injuries suffered during a lacrosse game. We are deeply touched by the overwhelming support and kindness shown by our community and beyond. We ask that you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the message read.

Witnesses recounted the tragic moment when an Olmsted Falls player, while attempting a shot on goal, inadvertently struck Dylan at the base of his head, below the helmet, which ultimately led to his injuries.

In the wake of this tragedy, Bay High School announced the cancellation of the boys lacrosse game originally scheduled for Thursday against Keystone, opting instead to hold a prayer service at St. Raphael Catholic Church at 7 p.m. to honor Dylan’s memory. Superintendent Scot Prebles highlighted the importance of emotional support during this challenging time, stating that counselors had been made available to both Dylan’s teammates and students at Olmsted Falls High School.

Dr. Jim Lloyd, superintendent of Olmsted Falls, expressed solidarity with the Bay community, recognizing the deep impact such events have on small, close-knit communities. He praised the rapid and effective response of the school’s staff, trainers, EMS, and local police.

In a display of community support, a fundraising initiative known as Meal Train has been set up to assist the Veselic family during this difficult time, with over $28,000 raised as of Wednesday evening.

It’s a time of profound sorrow, yet the outpouring of support from the community showcases a strong spirit of unity and resilience, reminding everyone of the importance of coming together in times of tragedy. Our thoughts remain with Dylan’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
