Villagers in Burerua, Tailevu, are poised to significantly improve their drinking water situation with the launch of a new water meter project, which will eliminate their reliance on untreated water. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officially commissioned the initiative, which was spearheaded by the community themselves after years of grappling with sporadic water supply issues. The villagers collectively raised approximately $11,000 and reached out to the Prime Minister’s Office in 2024 for assistance in securing access to treated water.
In a speech delivered in the iTaukei language, Prime Minister Rabuka praised the villagers for their proactive approach in seeking better water services, highlighting their initiative as a powerful example of community leadership. He underscored the potential positive outcomes that can result from government support when communities take charge of their own development. Rabuka noted that Burerua serves as an inspiring model for other villages, demonstrating that collective action can lead to meaningful progress.
Seru Soderberg, CEO of the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF), shared that Burerua is now connected to the Namau water supply system, which has been running since 2020 and is capable of treating up to five million liters of water daily. He assured the community that the expansion of this system would also benefit other rural villages in the region between Korovou and Nausori.
For Burerua resident Vani Bera, this project signifies the end of enduring hardships. She reminisced about the challenging conditions faced by her community, including prolonged three-week droughts and dependence on untreated rural water sources. Bera actively advocated for improved water access, writing to the Prime Minister and highlighting the community’s readiness to contribute to funding efforts.
This development aligns with similar initiatives across Fiji, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing water access in rural areas. Projects in locations such as Vusama and Navisabasaba illustrate a concerted push toward improving public health and living conditions by expanding access to clean water. Local leaders and community members have expressed heartfelt gratitude, recognizing the transformative impact of these projects on their well-being.
As clean, treated water begins to flow into the homes of Burerua, it marks a hopeful new chapter for the community, illustrating the achievements that can be realized through dedication, collaboration, and supportive government initiatives. The promise of better health and enhanced living conditions is now within reach for the villagers, highlighting the strength of unity and determination in overcoming challenges.
