Commonwealth Unveils Patsy Robertson Award to Elevate Youth Media for Peace

The 2026 Commonwealth Youth Awards will feature a new accolade, the Patsy Robertson Award for Outstanding Communications Skills in Advancing Community Development and Peace. This award seeks to honor young journalists, broadcasters, and writers who demonstrate exceptional dedication, creativity, and bravery in promoting media freedom and encouraging inclusive democratic societies. It is open to a wide array of media professions, including editors, reporters, photojournalists, webcasters, social media activists, and more.

Initiated by the Commonwealth Association in memory of its first Chair, the late Patsy Robertson, this inaugural award acknowledges her significant contribution to advancing communications within the Commonwealth. Winning this award includes a cash prize of £1,000, accompanied by a certificate and a trophy.

In alignment with the criteria of the Commonwealth Youth Awards, nominees must be Commonwealth citizens aged 15 to 29 by December 31, 2025, have engaged in development work for at least a year, and have a notable record of impactful development aligned with any of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Candidates for the Patsy Robertson award should specifically showcase how their work promotes SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. The nomination period remains open until October 17, 2025.

In paying tribute to Patsy Robertson’s legacy, Max Gaylard, the Chair of the Commonwealth Association, highlighted the intention behind this award to commend the efforts of young communicators. He emphasized that young journalists not only report stories but also play a crucial role in shaping democratic societies.

Layne Robinson, Head of Social Policy Development at the Commonwealth Secretariat, reiterated the importance of the Commonwealth Youth Awards as a platform celebrating young leaders enhancing community development and democracy. By focusing on achievements in media and communications, the awards aim to amplify the commitment to fostering inclusive societies and enhancing governance principles across the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Youth Awards for Excellence in Development Work continue to recognize extraordinary young individuals whose contributions have had a lasting and innovative impact at both local and national levels. The inclusion of the Patsy Robertson Award further expands this mission by emphasizing the significance of communication in community transformation.
