Commonwealth Unveils Patsy Robertson Award for Young Media Leaders

The Commonwealth Youth Awards 2026 have introduced a new distinction, the Patsy Robertson Award for Outstanding Communications Skills in Advancing Community Development and Peace. This award is dedicated to recognizing young journalists and media professionals who exhibit remarkable commitment, creativity, and courage in promoting media freedom and fostering inclusive democratic societies. Eligible participants span all media disciplines, including editors, reporters, photojournalists, webcasters, and social media activists.

This award, initiated by the Commonwealth Association in memory of its late first Chair, Patsy Robertson, underscores her pivotal role in advancing Commonwealth communications. Recipients of this honor will receive a cash award of £1,000, along with a certificate and a trophy.

Consistent with the Commonwealth Youth Awards criteria, nominees should be Commonwealth citizens aged 15 to 29 by December 31, 2025, and have a minimum of one year of experience in development work. They must also demonstrate a significant impact aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Applicants for the Patsy Robertson award are specifically required to highlight contributions supporting SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. Nominations will be accepted until October 17, 2025.

Max Gaylard, Chair of the Commonwealth Association, emphasized that the award aims to recognize the vital role of young communicators who not only report but also contribute significantly to shaping democratic societies. Layne Robinson, Head of Social Policy Development at the Commonwealth Secretariat, echoed the sentiment, noting the awards’ focus on celebrating young leaders advancing community development and democracy. By spotlighting achievements in media and communications, these awards strive to bolster commitments to inclusive societies and good governance across the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Youth Awards for Excellence in Development Work continue their tradition of honoring young individuals making substantial and innovative impacts at both local and national levels. The Patsy Robertson Award strengthens this mission by highlighting how communications can drive community transformation and peacebuilding.
