The Washington Commanders have announced the retirement of number 81, honoring Hall of Fame wide receiver Art Monk. This significant event will take place during the team’s Week 9 game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday Night Football. Monk, who played for the franchise until the end of the 1993 season, has not had his number worn by any player since his departure.
Monk holds the record as the franchise’s all-time leader in receptions with 888 catches and receiving yards totaling 12,026. During his emotional announcement, Monk credited his teammates for their contributions to his success, stating, “I can sit here and take all the credit, but a lot of the credit also goes to them and to the rest of my teammates because a team is a team. One could not do their job without the other.”
Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008, Monk’s illustrious career includes three Super Bowl championships, one first-team All-Pro selection, and three Pro Bowl honors. With this retirement, he becomes the sixth player in the organization’s history to have his jersey officially retired, joining an esteemed group that includes legends like Darrell Green, Sammy Baugh, and the late Sean Taylor.
This ceremony not only celebrates Monk’s outstanding contributions to the team but also serves as a reminder of his significant impact on the franchise’s history and legacy. It is a hopeful moment for fans as it symbolizes appreciation and respect for the athletes who have shaped the team’s identity over the years.
