Columbia University reported on Thursday that one of its students was arrested by federal immigration officers who allegedly misrepresented themselves to gain access to a residential building for the apprehension. Claire Shipman, the acting president of the prestigious institution in New York City, confirmed in a statement that the university is actively collecting more information about the incident, which occurred earlier that morning.

While the university did not disclose the student’s identity or immigration status, reports indicate that the student is Ellie Aghayeva, an undergraduate who posted a distressing message on Instagram, stating, “Dhs illegally arrested me. Please help,” alongside a photo that appeared to depict her in a vehicle.

Shipman’s statement explained that federal agents misrepresented their intentions by claiming to search for a “missing person.” She emphasized the importance of judicial requirements for law enforcement, stating, “All law enforcement agents must have a judicial warrant or judicial subpoena to access non-public areas of the university. An administrative warrant is not sufficient.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and border patrol, did not respond immediately to inquiries regarding the incident.

This event occurs nearly a year after another controversial incident where two Columbia students, Mahmoud Khalil and Mohsen Mahdawi, both Palestinians with valid immigration status, were detained by immigration officials. Their arrests were part of a broader crackdown on dissent against Israel’s military operations in Gaza. A federal judge later deemed that detention unconstitutional, emphasizing the need for protection of free speech.

The recent arrest has sparked concern within the university community, prompting plans for an emergency vigil at noon to support Aghayeva. Local leaders, including New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin and Council Majority Leader Shaun Abreu, released a joint statement condemning the student’s detention. They insisted, “ICE has no place in our schools and universities,” asserting that such actions erode trust and safety within the community.

As Columbia University navigates this troubling incident, it highlights ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement and its impact on educational environments. The university’s commitment to legal support for the student reflects its dedication to ensuring the rights and safety of its community members.
