The Indianapolis Colts are considering strengthening their quarterback depth by possibly acquiring another former New York Giants quarterback, Zach Wilson. Having benefited from the outstanding performance of Daniel Jones, who currently leads the NFL in QBR at 79.7, the Colts are looking for a reliable backup option following the injury to Anthony Richardson Sr. Wilson has been deemed surplus to requirements in New York after being benched in favor of Jaxson Dart, but he remains an intriguing prospect.
While Jones has had a successful run so far, completing a full season as a starter without injuries just once in seven years raises concerns about depth at the position. Even though Jones’ sack rate has decreased, he is still taking hits on 13.3% of his snaps this season. In the event of an injury to Jones, the Colts would have to rely on rookie Riley Leonard, making the need for a seasoned backup more pressing.
Wilson’s time in New York has been challenging, but there have been glimpses of his potential, notably when he threw for 450 yards and three touchdowns against Dallas earlier in the season. The Colts are in a strong position but would prefer a more experienced quarterback should Jones go down. Acquiring Wilson would be a strategic move, involving only a seventh-round pick, while also keeping his salary manageable at around $1.3 million through the remainder of the 2025 season.
This potential addition could provide Indianapolis with a safety net and further bolster their playoff ambitions, while also giving Wilson a fresh chance to revive his career in a new environment.
