A Colorado man is facing serious charges following a premeditated attack during a pro-Israel demonstration this past Sunday. Mohammed Sabry Soliman, 45, has been charged with federal hate crimes, as well as attempted murder, assault, and the use of explosive devices under state law. This horrifying incident occurred at an outdoor mall in Boulder, where he allegedly threw Molotov cocktails into a gathering organized by Run for Their Lives, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about Israeli hostages held in Gaza.
Investigators claim that Soliman meticulously planned the attack for a year, stating he intended to target the demonstrators after discovering them online. During the assault, he shouted “Free Palestine” while launching two incendiary devices, injuring eight attendees, several of whom suffered burns and required hospitalization. Initially, eight victims were reported, but later, four additional individuals with minor injuries came forward. Among the injured was Rabbi Israel Wilhelm, a Holocaust survivor and director of the Chabad at the University of Colorado Boulder. This attack coincided with the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, raising further concerns about rising antisemitism in America.
Boulder Police reported that authorities found at least 16 additional unlit Molotov cocktails and a backpack sprayer filled with octane gasoline, indicating the severity of Soliman’s intentions. Dressed as a gardener to blend in with the crowd, he posed a substantial threat to the safety of the demonstrators.
In a brief court appearance, conducted via a video feed from jail, Soliman exhibited little more than compliance with procedural questions but did not provide an explanation for his actions. Law enforcement officials believe he acted independently and is set to face formal charges on Thursday.
This incident is part of a troubling trend, as attacks against Jewish individuals and communities have seen an alarming increase in recent months, reinforcing the need for heightened awareness and protection. Communities and leaders are urged to stand together against hate and violence to ensure safety for all.
The situation highlights the importance of addressing underlying issues of hate while encouraging empathy and dialogue among diverse communities. Promoting understanding and respect can create a more inclusive society, showcasing that despite challenges, hope for unity remains strong.
