Colman Domingo has officially been cast as the voice of the Cowardly Lion in the highly anticipated musical sequel, “Wicked: For Good,” a revelation he shared with his followers on Instagram on Monday. This announcement follows considerable fan speculation that arose after director Jon M. Chu hinted that a notable name would portray the character in the forthcoming film.
“Wicked” and its sequel, “Wicked: For Good,” were filmed in succession as part of a single grand production, translating the beloved Broadway musical into two feature films. This strategic move by Universal Pictures has already proven successful, with the first installment banking over $756 million worldwide and securing ten Oscar nominations, of which it won two.
Returning to reprise their roles are Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, in “Wicked: For Good,” which is set to release on Thanksgiving. The sequel promises to conclude the beloved story while seamlessly incorporating characters from “The Wizard of Oz,” maintaining the spirit of the original stage musical.
Joining Domingo, Erivo, and Grande in the star-studded cast are Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum, all of whom contribute to the film’s rich narrative landscape.
Domingo’s casting further amplifies his impressive trajectory within the entertainment industry, especially after his back-to-back awards season successes that earned him Best Actor Oscar nominations for his performances in “Rustin” and “Sing Sing.” His recent projects include “The Four Seasons,” “Euphoria,” and “The Madness,” with upcoming appearances in “Dead Man’s Wire,” “The Running Man,” “Michael,” and a yet-to-be-titled film directed by Steven Spielberg.
“Wicked: For Good” is set to soar into theaters on November 21, generating excitement among fans eagerly awaiting this cinematic celebration of the beloved musical.
