The Colfax Marathon weekend is in full swing in Denver, beginning Saturday with the popular 5K run through City Park, attracting thousands of enthusiastic runners. This event is touted as the largest running event in Colorado and serves as a highlight for the community.
Despite ongoing construction related to Denver’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, the marathon route will still follow the iconic East Colfax Avenue, ensuring that participants enjoy the vibrant atmosphere the street offers. Race announcer Brittany Charboneau affirmed the significance of Colfax by stating, “Yeah, we can’t have the Colfax marathon without Colfax,” emphasizing the intrinsic value the route holds for the event and its participants.
However, the construction has posed considerable challenges for small businesses along the affected corridor. Jonathan Alberico, owner of Learned Lemur, an oddities store, noted that his business has suffered significantly since the construction began, seeing sales cut in half. In response to the challenging circumstances, local businesses are banding together to promote foot traffic during the marathon weekend, including hosting an “apothecary tour” to attract attendees and raise awareness of their offerings.
Alberico acknowledged the importance of collaboration among businesses in these tough times, saying, “Right now, we need it a lot.” He remains optimistic that the marathon will help rejuvenate interest and activity in the area.
The Colfax Marathon not only highlights the spirit and community of the iconic street but also presents a vital opportunity for local businesses that are eager for increased visibility and traffic. The hope is that the event will not only celebrate the running culture but also spark a resurgence for businesses impacted by the ongoing construction, fostering resilience and community spirit in Denver.
