Coby White is set to make his debut with the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday, marking a significant moment in his NBA career as he steps onto the court at the United Center, the former home of the Chicago Bulls. The trade that brought White to Charlotte was finalized during this month’s deadline, ending a six-and-a-half year tenure with the Bulls.

Selected seventh overall in the 2019 draft, White has been a notable player for Chicago but faced challenges with injuries this season, being limited to just 29 games due to a calf issue. Despite this, he has proven to be a valuable offensive asset, averaging 18.6 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game, with an impressive shooting percentage of .438 from the field.

Initially, the Hornets had offered a package that included three second-round picks in exchange for White, but negotiations changed after a physical examination revealed his calf injury, leading to a reduction in the draft picks involved. Now healthy, White is eager to contribute to his new team.

Speaking to reporters, White reflected on his time with the Bulls, mentioning that discussions regarding a potential contract extension took place earlier in the season. However, as the team’s performance faltered, he anticipated a trade at the deadline. “Things change,” he noted, acknowledging the team’s struggles, which have them currently on a nine-game losing streak and seeking a win in a challenging month.

Conversely, the Hornets’ fortunes have shifted positively as they look to build on a strong performance with a record of 23-17 after an initial rough start of 4-14. Their recent success, including 11 wins in the last 14 games, contrasts sharply with the Bulls’ ongoing difficulties. As White transitions to his new role, expectations are high for him to make an impact and help Charlotte continue its upward trajectory.
