Residents of Ucunivanua Village have expressed growing concern over peculiar land and maritime activities that have ignited fears regarding potential narcotics-related threats. In response, the community has launched an initiative aimed at monitoring these activities and addressing any possible dangers.
Josateki Rokomalani, the village spokesman, noted that residents have observed an increase in suspicious visitors and vessels in their waters. He pointed out a particularly alarming event where two Asian individuals who had previously visited the village returned two weeks ago, requesting a boat ride into the open sea under the guise of being tourists.
Moreover, unidentified yachts have been reported anchoring in the village’s waters, often alongside a van during nighttime hours. This pattern of unusual activities has prompted local reactions, including notifying local police of the occurrences.
Residents perceive these incidents as potential threats rather than simple trespassing. Taking proactive steps, village leaders have initiated a campaign aimed at educating the youth about the risks associated with drug use, which is being incorporated into regular community meetings.
Rokomalani also indicated that discussions are underway regarding a proposed village bylaw that would empower the community to remove individuals found to be trafficking, selling, or using narcotics. The proposal will undergo careful consultation with the vanua’s leadership to ensure a responsible and effective approach to this pressing issue.
