CNN is set to debut its new California-based late-night news show, “The Story Is,” hosted by Elex Michaelson, on Monday, October 27 at 9 p.m. PT. This innovative program aims to engage audiences not only with the latest news from California but also with global issues that resonate beyond state lines.
Elex Michaelson, an award-winning journalist renowned for his work on “The Issue Is With Elex Michaelson” on KTTV, brings his expertise and reputation for insightful public affairs discussions to this new venture. His previous experience includes hosting high-profile guests ranging from Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to Donald Trump, establishing him as a prominent figure in political journalism.
The show’s inaugural episode will feature California Governor Gavin Newsom, who will discuss the impending November 4 vote on state redistricting. Additional notable guests during the launch week include former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and political figures Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA) and Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff.
Michaelson expressed a commitment to fostering inclusive dialogues across the political spectrum. He stated, “The Story Is will waste no time in bringing together key figures… to have fair, respectful and inclusive conversations on the issues that are important to our viewers all over the world.” The show seeks to break away from conventional news formats by infusing elements of hope, joy, and humor.
As competition heats up in the late-night news slot, with shows like MSNBC’s “The Briefing with Jen Psaki” and “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” running reruns, Michaelson aims to capture viewers’ attention by presenting fresh takes on current events. He noted the rapid pace of media consumption, asserting that audiences are eager for more relevant and timely news.
Transitioning to a late-night format, Michaelson intends to explore how issues that resonate in California have broader implications globally, emphasizing topics like immigration, trade, and tariffs. “I don’t think this is going to be West Coast news tonight or a version of local news,” he asserted. Instead, he wishes to highlight the interconnectedness of global issues as seen through the lens of California.
“The Story Is” promises to be an engaging and dynamic addition to CNN’s lineup, setting out to redefine what late-night news can offer to its audience.
